일단 영어는 잘하고 볼일이다. 아무리 금과옥조의 생각이 머리속에 있어도 표현하지 못한다면 아무짝에도 쓸모없는 것.

강경화장관의 인터뷰는 군더더기 없지만 품격있는 영어의 모범이라 볼 수 있것다.

FOREIGN MINISTER'S INTERVIEW WITH BBC

[Minister Kang] I think we.. we understand North Korea better than anybody, having dealt with North Korea for decades, having had series of discussions off and on. We’ve not had any significant engagement in recent past, but this is an opportunity. You can have all kinds of theories of why they are here, but there are obviously calculations going on the part of North Korean decision-makers as to their actions. But I think, in the end, we have to make the most of it.

[Minister Kang] We track every messaging coming from North Korea, coming from our ally very very carefully. The daily management of the messaging is a big part of foreign policy, but again, we have to focus on the longer term. I think the longer term is on the denuclearization goal. We are very much on the same page with our American ally, but in fact (the) entire international community. The denuclearization objective is written into the series of (UN) Security Council resolutions and it commits everybody, all UN members, towards that goal.

[강경화 장관] 우리는 지난 수십 년 간 북한을 상대하고 때때로 대화를 해오면서 그 누구보다도 북한을 잘 이해하고 있다고 생각합니다. 최근 우리는 북한과 이렇다 하게 관여해오지는 못했지만, 이번은 기회입니다. 북한이 왜 대화에 나왔는지 갖가지 추측을 하실 수 있습니다. 북한도 분명 정책 결정자들 사이에서 나름의 계산을 하고 있을 것입니다. 그러나 저는 결국 우리가 이를 최대한 활용해야 한다고 봅니다.

[강경화 장관] 우리는 북한, 그리고 동맹국인 미국으로부터 나오는 모든 메시지를 그 때 그 때마다 매우 예의 주시하고 있습니다. 매일 매일 그러한 메시지를 관리하는 일은 외교 정책의 중요한 부분 중 하나입니다. 그러나 다시 한 번 말씀드리지만, 우리는 보다 장기적인 부분에 초점을 맞춰야 합니다. 그것은 바로 비핵화라는 목표입니다. 우리는 (이러한 목표에 있어) 동맹국인 미국, 그리고 국제사회 전체와 상당 부분 같은 입장에 있습니다. 비핵화라는 목표는 일련의 안보리 결의에 명문화되어 있으며, 동 결의는 모든 유엔 회원국들이 그러한 목표를 지향하도록 하고 있습니다.

Going the (full) distance. 끝까지 가다, (어려운 일을) 완수하다.

This is going to be a long, hard project. I hope I can go the distance.

이것은 오래 걸리고 하기 힘든 프로젝트입니다. 나는 끝까지 해내려고 합니다.

But we're not just giving it a go - we're very locked on to going the distance, to 90 degrees.

인생에서 얼마나 세게 치느냐가 중요하게 아니야,

But until you start believing in yourself, you ain't gonna have a life.
